BEYOND WORDS EXHIBITIONS   supporting the survivors of the Grenfell Tower disaster.

These people have lost everything and the whole experience, what they have seen, heard and breathed in simply cannot be fully imagined by anyone who was not involved. There are no words that can fully describe this disaster this is why I would like the exhibition to be called Beyond Words. Diana Dias-Leao.

On the 14th of June, the Grenfell Tower burnt fiercely for many hours. Lives were lost. Lives were changed irrevocably.

Diana Dias-Leao is a glass artist who was moved so much by what she saw unfolding before her at the Grenfell Tower that she was compelled to act. Not just to sit and talk but to do something.  Putting the call out to other artists and photographers, Eleonora Oleotto, a PhotoAid Photographer who uses photography to help people came forward after documenting the disaster.

Diana has been given space in two galleriesin Faroe Road and Masbro Road to hold exhibitions of glass and photography works donated by artists to be sold in order to raise as much money as possible for the Grenfell Tower survivors. The Faroe Road space has been generously donated by ACAVA.

Diana is offering her glass dresses to be sold from an exhibition and all the money raised would go to the Grenfell Tower Fund. Glass works are created with the use of furnace or kiln both involving intense heat and fire these creations could resemble ice crystals, cool iridescent frosty works that sparkle and glitter to change the image entirely from mayhem to magic.

Eleonora Oleotto uses therapeutic photography in her practice to help people and other professionals like coaches and psychologists, she recently joined PhotoAid Global who is supporting the project. The 14th of June was a difficult and intense day for me too. I helped volunteers sort items and then felt the need to walk into the area to see and feel what other people were going through. It took me some hours before being able to start taking pictures. There was Silence. A deep Silence. Our eyes talked to each other. Our hands helped each other. There was a big and deep sense of humanity. As it should be always in our lives.

This is a wonderful and generous thing Diana is doing to help the families of the Grenfell Tower, and it is characteristic of Eleonora to be compelled to act with empathy and love. PhotoAid put Eleonora who we knew was creating her own project together with Diana and we are supporting them where we can. The Private Views are open, will we see you there? Dr Vanessa Champion, founder of PhotoAid Global.

ACAVA

ACAVA has been working with our diverse and creative community for twenty years, providing free and affordable art activities for local people in partnership with the NHS, schools and other local community organisations. We have two community spaces within Notting Dale ward, one purpose built studio at our main offices, Blechynden St and a project/ exhibition space at the former children’s centre on Maxilla Walk.

Since the Grenfell fire we have been in discussion with many other local like-minded organisations and individuals about how we can best support the local community in its healing and recovery. We are already extending existing projects to meet demand, and have identified our privileged position as an organisation with two dedicated creative community spaces as an asset we can use. Our ‘Flourish Maxilla’ programme has offered artist led family workshops throughout the summer holidays, and will continue to during school holidays for the next year at least. We are also working with Latimer Community Art Therapy (LCAT) and from September are providing a fully funded programme of formal art therapy to local people delivered by fully qualified, state registered Art Psychotherapists. Our partnership with NHS West London Clinical Commissioning Group will continue with the provision of a two year programme of Art for Wellbeing projects, alongside a programme of walking and photography projects in partnership with the Venture Centre and RBKC Public Health. To make a donation to ACAVA’s Grenfell Response please call our offices on 0208 960 5015. All donations will go directly to the delivery of activities for local people.

blog3a....Once everyone arrived at Charecroft Hall and was settled Barbara opened the event based on the theme ‘Breaking Bread’ where each person brought along bread representing their country of origin. It was amazing to see taste and smell some of the many textures and varieties including, Eritrean, Jewish and South American among others that were heartily enjoyed by all with oils, spreads and dips.

Confident Parent Happy Child Reunion

The first Confident Parent Happy Child Programme, held on 1st December was a great success. Over 25 parents, children and professionals came to share their experiences of attending parenting courses over the last two years. After a hearty lunch the group settled into a short workshops sharing their reflections of the courses they attended and ideas to shape the future of the Programme. Notably a number were keen to have a monthly drop-in support group to review parenting strategies and touch base with friends -watch this space.
Three parents gave encouraging and at times moving testimonies of their journeys with the CPHC to round up a very inspiration afternoon. Many thanks to all who attended and …look out for next year’s date.
